The district of Mayfair was named after the fortnight-long May Fair, a festival with pagan roots that was held in the area from 1686 until it was banned in 1764. Famously the most expensive square on Monopoly, Mayfair has been a fashionable residential area since the 17th century and now has some of the most expensive rental rates in the world.
Today the area is predominantly commercial and it also boasts the largest concentration of luxury hotels in London and many fine restaurants. It is home to the United States Embassy, the Royal Academy of Arts, the Wallace Collection and the Handel House Museum.

Mayfair has some of the best shopping in London. The Royal Arcade and the Burlington Arcade provide elegant covered shopping areas for bespoke jewellery and exclusive clothing and accessories. New Bond Street and Old Bond street provide some of the best designer boutiques and big name brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Tiffany & Co and DKNY. Savile Row is famous for its bespoke tailoring for men and Fortnum and Mason is the place to go for luxury foods and drinks.
